Job Summary
This position exercises significant independence in providing technical and instructional support for all areas of the Art and Design Department related to instructional equipment and safety. Under the general supervision of the Department Chair and in consultation with the Studio Art faculty lead, the Studio Art Technician is responsible for the full range of duties associated with the operation, coordination, and instructional support services of the Art and Design studios (these include a wood shop and metalworking equipment as well as ceramics studio and kilns). This position will coordinate activity, access and provide specialized technical and instructional support for classes and individual student projects. They will make recommendations to the faculty and department regarding equipment, supply purchase and replacement, and procedures for safety and maintenance.
Department Summary
The Art and Design Department offers a four-year curriculum leading to a Bachelor of Fine Arts Degree. The curriculum prepares students for professional participation in graphic design, photography and video, and studio art, as well as graduate school in fine art. The department offers a balanced experience in the arts that includes: 2-D and 3-D studio art, art history, graphic design, photography and video, digital design, critical theory, and a general education in liberal arts.
Key Qualifications
Ability to initiate, establish, and foster communication and teamwork by maintaining a positive, cooperative, productive work atmosphere in and outside the University with the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships within a diverse population and with those from various cultural backgrounds.
Strong understanding of safety practices and Environmental Health and Safety policies and procedures.
Demonstrated ability to teach/train the skills required to safely and effectively use tools, materials and techniques common to wood, metals, and plastics.
Knowledge of operation and maintenance associated with common hand tools and stationary shop equipment used in wood-working (such as tables saw, drill press, miter saw, band saw, belt sander, etc.), and metal-working (such as drill press, grinders, press brake, welding, etc.). Ability to perform various skilled and semi-skilled tasks, including woodworking, welding, use of adhesives and fasteners, construction methods, and use of stationary and portable power tools.
Education and Experience
Equivalent to three years of experience providing instructional support services for a related unit or discipline, or in producing materials or supplies or repairing equipment in a discipline related to the area to which assigned.
OR
Equivalent to two years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
OR
Equivalent to four years of college with 16 semester units in courses involving extensive use of materials, supplies, or equipment and in a discipline related to the area to which assigned may be substituted for two years of the required experience.
Salary and Benefits:
Anticipated Hiring Range: $58,000 - $65,000 annually
Classification Range: $46,884 - $81,348 annually
