Web designers offer creative solutions for the layout, logical navigation, visual appearance, and usability of a website. Their job involves developing a graphic design that effectively communicates the ideas being promoted by the website. A website designer may play a part in in the initial planning of a website, meeting with the client to discuss ideas for the layout and organization of the site, the types of colors or images to use, and other matters concerning overall graphic design.
To create successful web pages, web designers must have sound understanding of software functionality as well as graphic design skills. A mastery of HTML is required and also an adept knowledge of FTP. A web designer must be familiar with issues of browser/server compatibility. Additionally, the designer must know computer languages such as Javascript, which can be used to create web pages that are compatible with a wide range of hardware and software.
Website designers work with a client or web producer to develop and refine ideas. They therefore must have strong verbal and visual communications skills. They need to be flexible because they may be called upon to change their designs. Since websites are constantly updated to remain current, they need to work well under the pressure of tight deadlines and changing demands.
