Fashion Designer Jobs description

Fashion designers create clothing and accessory designs. Their job includes sketching ideas, drawing and cutting patterns to create sample garments, selecting fabric and trimmings, combining basic dressmaking and tailoring principles with flat pattern work and draping techniques, fitting and modifying the finished garment, arranging showings for press and buyers when the sample garment line is ready, comparing merchandise with those of the competitors, keeping current on trends by reading trade magazines and attending fashion shows, and finally, visiting textile showrooms to keep up to date on latest fabrics.
Quintessentially, fashion designers need to have good design, idea generation, visualisation, and coordination skills. They are required to think original and be proactive learners at all times. As much as the job demands them to be highly creative, excessive competition demands fashion designers to be equipped with sound business knowledge. It is therefore important for them to learn the personality of firms, types of stores that buy the merchandise, and the age and tastes of the stores' clientele. With experience, a seasoned fashion designer will know exactly what creations will sell at a profit in an intended market, within a defined price range, at a particular time of the year.
By large, fashion designers specialize in one type of garment or accessory design such as men's or women's wear, children's garments, lingerie, swimwear, handbags, or shoes.
