The substation physical (outdoor) designer must create a detailed set of substation drawings provided basic design parameters from the project engineer. Requires technical knowledge and design experience beyond CAD tool operation.
Job Description
Roles and Responsibilities
With minimal direction and supervision, creates and prepares the following construction documents for extra high voltage substations per applicable CAD and engineering standards:
Substation yard and control house layouts, plan and section views, and physical details
Raceway plans and details
Basic structural design
Project Bill of Material
Project Master Drawing List
Clearly communicate and coordinate project activities with project engineer, civil engineer, site manager, and others as needed
Provides leadership, guidance, and instruction to less experienced staff members
Takes responsibility for the quality and accuracy of work product
Prepares Design and Drafting hours estimates at request of Engineering Management
Other duties will be assigned as required.
Conducts and attends project site walkdowns, utilizes information from walkdowns in design
Maintains company culture by following and enforcing quality procedures and design processes
Required Qualifications
High school diploma / GED
Minimum 5 years of experience in physical design of air or gas insulated substations for a utility or engineering firm
Minimum 2 years of drafting and detailing experience with AutoCAD and/or MicroStation.
Ability and willingness to travel 10% of the time, including international, and must comply with all relevant company travel and tax policies
Preferred GE office location is in OakBrook Terrace, IL. Other GE offices may be considered.
Desired Characteristics
Knowledge of drafting principles, techniques, and procedures.
Proficiency with the manipulation of vector and raster drawing files in AutoCAD and MicroStation.
Associates Degree in Drafting and Design Technology or bachelor’s degree in Engineering or Engineering Technology field
Expert level skills with Autodesk AutoCAD® and/or Bentley MicroStation.
CAD system accreditation
3D substation design experience with BIM, preference for Autodesk Revit®
Advanced skill & experience using Bentley OpenUtilities Substation Design Software
Develop detailed substation physical layouts/elevations, and implementing electrical clearances, with minimal direction. Develop designs of substation rigid and strain bus.
Substation ground grid, surge protection, and lightning strike protection detailed design
Design civil foundations, steel detailing, and electrical power equipment such as support structures and insulators.
Implement relevant codes and standards such as NEC, NESC, IEEE, NEMA, ANSI, and utility substation design standards
Knowledge of electrical drawing symbols and their purpose. Ability to read one-lines and substation drawings
