Job Description SummaryMedication Delivery Solution (MDS) is seeking a Sr. Staff Engineer to serve as a subject matter expert in Human Factors and User Experience Design (HF UXD). HF UXD is a scientific discipline that studies how people interact with products or systems and seeks to improve safety, efficacy, and user delight.
This individual will utilize evidence based tools in research, design, and business strategy to identify usability needs and risks, influence organizational culture across cross-functional teams and leadership, and drive user-centered product development principles to reduce risks, minimize development costs, and maximize market acceptance of solutions.
The HF UXD Team works within MDS Architecture and Innovation (A&I). The goal of A&I is to stimulate and lead concept and technology innovation spanning multiple product platforms. The role of HF UXD within this group is to bring knowledge and expertise in user-centered design that begins with the initiation of programs and transitions into design and development. The HF UXD engineer will have the opportunity to engage in numerous MDS product development programs within A&I and across 3 business groups – Catheter Care and Medication Delivery (CCMD) in Franklin Lakes, Vascular Access Devices (VAD) in Salt Lake City and Sandy, UT, and Infusion Specialty Disposables (ISD) in San Diego and Brea, CA. They will also serve as a key stakeholder and contributor to the MDS Lean Engineering group that works to optimize engineering tools, best practices, and R&D procedures across MDS as well as spear heads efforts for R&D related to MDR.
The HF UXD engineer will serve as a strategic and executional leader across the MDS business for human factors engineering and user experience design – engaging in product design work and independent review, including the following:
Usability Strategy, Planning, & Execution:
Strategize with cross functional core teams and leaders to ensure human factors and usability strategies and plans are appropriately scaled across multiple and/or complex high impact, business critical programs.
Execute HF UXD deliverables for key programs by working independently, overseeing the execution of others, managing the work of external vendors, and consulting with project teams to ensure high quality deliverables.
Serve as primary contact for the MDS MDR team to guide strategy and execution associated with identifying and closing gaps in project usability files.
Generative Research & Front End Innovation:
Partner and collaborate with Front End Innovation and Biodesign teams to conduct generative research including but not limited to observational research (contextual inquiry and ethnography), competitive usability assessment, subject matter expert (SME) and key opinion leader (KOL) interviews, focus groups, and surveys.
Human Factors & Usability Engineering Tools:
Drive understanding of the human-system interface through the creation of user profiles, environmental characterization, work flow mapping, task analysis, functional modeling, and use cases / scenarios.
Utilize anthropometry, biomechanics, and human capability data to support, analyze, and optimization system design and ergonomics.
User Needs/Requirements & User Risk Assessment:
Distill research insights into themes that inform user needs, user risk, and user interface design through processes such as affinitization or KJ Analysis to ensure traceability.
Have a deep understanding of the requirements management process that focuses on the creation of user needs and stakeholder requirements to influence best practices across cross functional teams and leaders.
Evaluate Use Error as part of use-related risk analysis (aEURA, uFMEA, and/or Hazard Analysis) and contribute to mitigation efforts in partnership with medical affairs and cross-functional teams.
Design of User Interfaces:
Design and develop user interfaces which include but are not limited to devices, software, packaging, instructions, and training
Conduct product evaluations, brainstorming sessions, competitive analysis, and other usability engineering methodologies with internal teams and external vendors.
Utilize low to high fidelity prototyping methods to enable quick turn customer centric design loops that power Agile processes and decision making.
Formative Evaluation, Design Validation, and Summative Human Factor Design Validation:
Design, plan, execute, analyze, and report using qualitative and quantitative research as part of formative study evaluation which may include but are not limited to heuristic evaluation, expert review, simulated use studies, and actual use studies.
Serve as executional lead and/or the contact for external vendors and business group Verification & Validation (V&V) teams during Design Validation and Summative Human Factors Validation Testing.
Partner with internal and external teams such as Global Clinical Development, Pre-Clinical Development, and Medical Affairs to perform Pre-Clinical and Clinical Studies.
In addition to program responsibilities, the HF UXD engineer will also work to lead efforts to educate and improve human factors engineering and user experience design throughout the BD community. They will accomplish this by doing work that exemplifies best practices, mentoring other engineers within HF UXD and on project teams, participating in and holding training/workshops, and providing constructive challenge to MDS and cross-business teams as independent reviewers and advocates of the customer and end-user.
A key characteristic of an associate in this role is an all-in, get-your-hands-dirty mindset. The associate should be able to figure out how to prototype a concept quickly, in sometimes unconventional ways, to get a quick reaction or test feasibility with end users to enable Agile development. A level of comfort in a wood, metal, or machine shop, and the ability to piece components together in a lab is strongly desired. This is not a sit-at-your desk, someone else makes the parts job – it is very practical and necessary to spur innovation in the MDS business.
6-10 years of technical experience
Bachelor’s Degree in a technical field (mechanical engineering preferred)
Deep understanding of applicable standards and industry guidance for medical devices and usability engineering including: IEC 62366-1, FDA Guidance for Human Factors (2016), ISO 13485, FDA Guidance for Design Controls, ISO 14971
Extensive experience performing usability studies and translating HF UXD findings into user-needs/requirements, user risk, and/or design solutions related to the user interface
At least 5 years of experience leading and/or managing the work of outside partners and/or internal team members
Mastered at least one of the following to support innovation, design, and development:
Sketching or Graphic Design
3D Modeling and Drafting (SolidWorks Preferred)
Wire Fame and Programming
Technology Development in areas such as but not limited to Mechanical, Electrical, or Software Engineering
Demonstrated creation of new concepts and Intellectual Property (IP)
Master’s Degree or PhD in a technical field (mechanical engineering, systems engineering, human factors engineering, biomedical engineering, or industrial design preferred)
5 years of experience working with medical devices
Highly motivated self-starter able to influence teams, leaders, and key program stakeholders
Mastery of written and verbal communication skills, with ability to present complex ideas to multiple levels
