Costume Designer Jobs description
Costume designers research, design, and prepare costumes for theatrical, film, or television productions. They work closely with the producer, director, and the set designer right from the production planning stage in order to make original costumes or adapt existing costumes for the principal actors and supporting artists.The key responsibilities of a costume designer includes reading the script to gain knowledge of the period in which the production is set and researching the type of clothes and accessories worn for a historical production, using the internet, libraries, and specialist sources such as museums. Coming up with ideas for costumes that are in line with the team's overall ideas, complement set designs, and lighting, and are within the production budget is also the costume designer's job.
Costume designers also present design ideas to the production team, and brief and monitor the team of people producing the costumes to ensure that the costumes are ready for rehearsals, performances, or filming.
Needless to say, it is important for costume designers to have substantial knowledge of costume history and modern fashion, solid knowledge of lighting techniques, and excellent understanding of overall theatrical production processes. Costume designers also need a good knowledge of the properties of different fabrics and understanding of making up techniques.
Further, costume designers can just not do without superb drawing and computer-aided design skills, communication and interpersonal skills, persuasive presentation skills, problem solving skills, and costing and budgeting skills.
