Project Runway is a reality television show that tries to show viewers the intricacies of the fashion industry in the comfort of their homes. Viewers catch a glimpse of the cutthroat competition that design houses have to go through in order to ward off competition from rival houses.

Fashion is a booming business, supported and displayed by the rich and famous. These people are under constant public scrutiny — not only their fashion sense, but also their private lives. Project Runway, as the name suggests, is about a group of competing contestants who must prove their designing prowess and ability to work under pressure.

What might be in fashion this week might not necessarily be in fashion next week. Project Runway brings original designs to the public eye. Most designers who have not made it into the upper echelons of the fashion industry have been aided by the self-confidence that Project Runway inspires in people. Small-time designers’ original products might one day become successful because of the lessons and inspiration from the show.

Many people are, in some manner, ambitious. To have the realization early in life that your dream can provide for you is good. You will grow up focused and ready to learn the basic skills that will make you achieve your dream.

The more successful contestants in Project Runway are assured of cash prices and mentorship from world-renowned fashion houses. Project Runway has increased the number of people venturing into the fashion industry because they have firsthand information on what is required to succeed in the business.

Since it first premiered four years ago, Project Runway has grown in terms of audience, and some of the biggest fans of the show are fashion students. Many students have developed great hopes; they are competing among their peers, which is positive, as competition is very cutthroat in the fashion industry. Unfortunately, much of the backstabbing inherent in the field cannot be avoided.

The kind of exposure that the contestants receive from the contest is eye-opening. It teaches them life lessons, and lessons about the fashion industry. It makes them accept the fact that while one contestant might come up with a design that he or she believes to be his or her best piece ever, the industry judges may not feel the same way. Industry skills such as choosing the best models to highlight one’s individual style and artistic prowess are also necessary.

Project Runway has increased the zeal with which fashion houses carry out their duties. They design now as if for competition. Every fashion house would like to be associated with the winning contestant, and as Project Runway commands a massive audience, it provides an efficient marketing platform for the firms. The show easily demands premium advertising dollars. The audience represents a fashion-savvy segment of the population. They are the type of people who despair at the thought of wearing common attire. They represent the desired audience for the show. This has made fashion houses increase their advertising expenditures in a forum where a successful return on their money is guaranteed.

The fashion industry now recruits not only those possessing academic accolades, but also seeks out those people with raw creative ability, as well as those who have an understanding of urban culture. This does not mean that those with impressive academic qualifications will have the door shut on them — the fashion industry is dynamic, and their prowess will always be needed in various departments of the fashion industry.

Jobs in fashion will never be exhausted, as human beings’ fashion desires are fickle. The fact that Project Runway has been a success year after year can only mean one thing: the population is very fashion-conscious. College-age young people have been inspired by Project Runway and are now flooding into colleges to hone their skills in fashion. The number of applicants as well as students admitted into fashion schools has increased significantly since the show’s inception.

The fact that the license for Project Runway has been renewed into perpetuity means that its success and viewer base will continue to grow. Other countries, including Australia, have spun off their own, local versions of Project Runway. Some of the designers who used to work with Project Runway have launched their own versions of Project Runway, calling upon other designers to attend their shows. Project Runway’s target audience ranges greatly, from college students to top fashion industry moguls.

Project Runway reflects the cultural evolution of human beings throughout the ages. The designs borrow from representative themes from various ages — all are mirrored in the modern designs in some respect. These concepts will continue to be passed on to the next generation of fashion enthusiasts.

One can say that Project Runway continues to be a success story because fashion is a multibillion dollar industry. The new concepts it spawns are quickly tried out across the industry. Fashion colleges are admitting young fresh minds who would like to try their hands in the fashion industry. The industry also indirectly provides work for hair designers, media outlets, and even online bloggers! Associated behind-the-scenes gossip makes certain magazines fly off the racks, and provides subject matter for endless on-air conversations.
