''Home is where the heart is'' is a popular saying. All those who are looking for a career in interior design need to pour their heart while building a house for someone. In order to build a complete house one needs to have cohesion and combination of the key elements as proportion, balance, contrast rhythm, pattern & texture and harmony. It requires the best of furniture, color painted, accessories applied to it and perfect view of light.

Being a fresher in career of designing you need to plan your needs, reason for each corner to be that way and last but not the least, the budget that one has on hand. The beauty of the room and comfort exemplifies with the balance created in its key elements.

While designing a room one has to keep proportionate scale in mind, a well proportioned might look pleasant and the wrongly proportioned might give the over crowded and unfriendly look. A large end table or coffee table justifies the large overstuffed sofa; otherwise, these accents would simply be lost being miniature against the sofa proportionally. When considering scale, one has to consider scale of other rooms in the home, and the furniture around.

There are two patterns to design to balance. One is symmetrical and other is asymmetry.
In the symmetrical design, everything is perfectly balanced; here two of everything or items are mirrored in the room. E.g. one chair is placed exactly opposite another one just like it. Though it creates balance, experts mention it to be static room, lacking any visual interest or energy. Contrary to that experienced designers use asymmetry to create interest, which suggest objects balance well because they are judged by their visual weight, and not because of its pairings. E.g. Arrange a large sofa on a side of the room that is balanced by two large overstuffed chairs with an accent table in the middle and floor lamp behind. Though there is no symmetry in size or shape, these balance the sofa visually creating an asymmetrical layout of the furniture.

To have the feel of power and energy, we need to have right contrast in the room. The more the contrast it's easier to follow the intended design of the room, moving visually from one corner to another, led by the use of eye catching color and contrast. Brilliant use of color contrast captures our eyes and thus our minds. Bright color generates energy while the use of dull shades in complementary tones gives a soothing feel.

Only creating contrast would not be sufficient, we need to add rhythm to it by reusing specific colors, patterns, textures or themes throughout the room. One can create rhythm by working on few of the main colors and repeating them creatively in your paint scheme, fabrics and accents.

Our eyes easily pick up specific patterns while just taking a look and moving around. These patterns are grouped together, such as a brown wall is combined with a striped piece of fabric that has the same brown color in it. Patterns that don’t fit together create conflict in the mind, compromising the appearance of the space. You can pick one or two primary patterns or textures and diverse them within the color palette you’ve already created. This gives us best patterns and textures.

Different colors, designs and proportions combine to create harmony to give a feel of completeness. Even by removing just one element we will lose on harmonic feel, which is the ultimate goal of design. In the career as an interior designer, hope you will be able to harmonize all your career elements - possess all right sort of skills, a well crafted resume, best method of applying for the jobs, and able to apply your knowledge in your job once recruited.
